Abstract
Teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) gains a better chance to develop since many work fields require their workers to be able to “understand” English. This is not only because the workers will work abroad (Murtafi'ah, 2025), where English is the only language to communicate, but also because those who will work in the area of Indonesia are demanded to practice it well for professional use. The language functions almost everywhere, even in ASEAN countries where English is not the national language in those countries. But Indonesian citizens, as a part of ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) countries, have opportunities to work in other ASEAN countries due to the skilled labour mobility as one of the programs proposed by the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). Based on the AEC Blueprint 2025, skilled workers in all ASEAN countries are still facilitated to work outside of their home countries. There are eight prioritized professions for skilled labour under the AEC, such as engineers, nurses, architects, surveyors, accountants, medical practitioners, dentists, and tourism professionals (Fukunaga, 2019). Since the working language of ASEAN is English (ASEAN, 2015), those who work across ASEAN countries ideally should be able to speak English to support their job. The shipbuilding industry, which involves high technology and international standards, requires qualified workers who should be able 342 | Teaching English For Specific Purposes to read, write, and speak English for daily conversation as well as for specified exchanges because the workers may come from many nationalities. It leads to the fact that ESP at present has become more urgent for people due to the need to interact with people from different countries and cultures, especially while doing their jobs. As the urge for ESP is getting higher, the needs and opportunities for ESP teaching are also higher.
