Abstract
Indonesia has challenges in handling organic and inorganic waste, especially clam shells and water hyacinth. Clam shells are rich in calcium carbonate and have significant potential as an alternative to silica sand in making construction materials. On the other hand, water hyacinth fibers are lightweight natural fibers that can be used as reinforcing materials for composites. This research analyzes the effect of utilizing water hyacinth fiber and replacing silica sand with clam shell powder on the flexural strength and fire resistance of calcium silicate boards. The test shows that the utilization of water hyacinth fiber has a significant effect on the combustion resistance of calcium silicate boards using the hand lay-up method. Based on ANOVA test analysis, the specimen composition with effective fire resistance in reducing the burned area was a combination of 5 percent fiber and 0 percent clam shell or full silica sand, which resulted in the smallest average burned area of 1,619.81 cubic millimeter. Meanwhile, the composition of specimens replacing silica sand with clam shell powder showed a significant impact with a Pvalue of 0.018. The maximum bending strength was recorded in the combination of 5 percent fiber and 100 percent clam shell, which was 24.0 MPa.
