Abstract

Glycerin waste is a by-product of the biodiesel industry with a calorific value of 25,175.98 kJ/kg, making it a potential substitute for part of the coal used in the cement industry’s combustion process. Its utilization reduces dependence on fossil fuels. However, its viscous nature and tendency to solidify at low temperatures present challenges for its application as a fuel. Therefore, a mixing machine is required to maintain the glycerin waste in a liquid state. This study aims to design a glycerin waste mixing machine using the Ulrich method, which includes identifying requirements, determining technical specifications, developing and selecting design concepts, and refining the final design. Three design concepts were developed based on manufacturing, operational, and maintenance criteria. The design and simulation were carried out using Autodesk Fusion 360 software. Frame strength analysis using the Finite Element Method showed a safety factor of 2.83, with a maximum stress of 87.5 MPa still below the allowable stress limit of 125 MPa indicating structural safety. Detailed drawings were prepared to visualize the final design, and the cost estimation showed a total manufacturing cost of IDR 16,695,500, covering raw materials, components, and fabrication. The results are expected to serve as a reference for developing similar machines, supporting more efficient glycerin waste processing, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing the competitiveness of the cement industry.
