Abstract

A fabrication workshop is a facility characterized by hot work activities such as cutting, drilling, welding, and blasting. Initial observations revealed that its active fire protection is limited to portable fire extinguishers. This research aims to determine the fire risk level using the Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) qualitative checklist method from NFPA 551 (2022); evaluate the existing extinguisher system per NFPA 10 (2022); and design supplementary active protection systems, including detectors, alarms, and hydrants, guided by NFPA 72 (2022) and NFPA 14 (2024). The study also calculates the reliability probability for controlled versus uncontrolled fire skenarios using Event Tree Analysis (ETA). The risk assessment identified the welding and cutting zones as high-risk areas. Additionally, three zones were classified with significant risk, nine with moderate risk, two with acceptable risk, and four with trivial risk. The evaluation concluded that an additional six Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) type extinguishers are required. The proposed system design includes six detectors, one fire alarm control panel, and two pillar hydrants. The hydraulic calculations for the hydrant system resulted in a headloss error percentage of 1.8% and a pump head error percentage of 5.9%. Finally, the ETA yielded a probability value of 0.09995 for a controlled fire event and 0.000047 for an uncontrolled fire event
